Air-Cooled vs. Water-Cooled

Air-cooled portable air conditioner units are an extremely popular choice for spot cooling in a wide variety of applications. Air-cooled portable air conditioner units are currently the most popular choice for climate control in computer server rooms or for use in rooms where there is other sensitive equipment because they do not require water lines as input and do not output wastewater.

Air-cooled air conditioners from OceanAire come in a range of sizes and styles. They include:

PAC Series
(12,000 – 60,000 BTUs)

2OAC Series
(12,000 – 60,000 BTUs)

CAC Series
(OA’s smallest air-cooled spot cooler)

How Do Air-Cooled Air Conditioners Work?

Air-cooled portable air conditioner units use ambient air and convert it to cool air with internal condensers. These units require the use of air ducts to extract hot air from the unit and expel it from the room, so an air-cooled air conditioner requires a means of ventilation.

Typically, air-cooled portable air conditioner units are ventilated through a window. It is also common to extract hot air via a ‘floated’ ceiling where the hot air can be dispersed and not re-enter the room. Other ways of ventilation include through doorways, into garages, or into any room which does not require cooling.

OceanAire’s large commercial-grade air-cooled portable air conditioners are often used outdoors and utilize ductwork to bring cold air to a desired location. Our clients utilize this type of air conditioner for weddings, concerts, and other outdoor events.

Industrial and Commercial Air Conditioners

OceanAire designs and manufactures a wide range of portable air conditioner units. Our products are made entirely in the U.S.A.

Water-cooled portable air conditioners from OceanAire come in a range of sizes and two styles. They include:

OWC Series
(12,000 BTU/HR to 60,050 BTU/HR)
Deluxe Water Cooled Air Conditioners

PWC Series
(12,000 BTU/HR to 60,050 BTU/HR)

Water-cooled portable air conditioners from OceanAire offer an extremely efficient and effective way to control the climate in any sized room. Because water-cooled air conditioners do not discharge large amounts of heat, they do not require exhaust ducting and are used to great effect in enclosed areas.

How Do Water-Cooled Portable Air Conditioning Units Work?

Portable air conditioner units that are water-cooled simply require access to an appropriate power source, a source of water, and a drain. Our units ship with hoses as an accessory. They will connect to any standard sink, but can also be used in janitor and utility sinks, or used with any other type of wastewater outlet.

There are many applications where an air-cooled air conditioner cannot be used. Because air-cooled air conditioners require ventilation to discharge the heat that they generate, ducts must be run through windows or into floated ceilings – or to other appropriate areas, such as a warehouse or other large spaces. This makes water-cooled air conditioners far more versatile than air-cooled portable air conditioners.

Advantages of Water Cooled Portable Air Conditioners

There are many advantages to using a water-cooled air conditioner to cool a space. Here are just a few:

  • No exhaust / ventilation / hot air outlet required
  • No negative air pressure caused by ducting
  • Water-cooled air conditioners work better in areas with high ambient temperatures (because they use water, not surrounding air to cool the condenser)
  • They can be used in extremely hot areas – hotter than air-cooled units can
  • Offer a greater cooling capacity (5-ton air cooled single phase units require 50 amps / 5-ton water cooled require 30 amps
