    Heat

With the advancement of server technology, power consumption comes to mind as the biggest factor. What often gets forgotten is the byproduct of power; heat.
Servers are being pushed harder than ever to perform an unlimited range of tasks. Racks that once held six servers are now designed to hold twice that. The building air conditioner, which was adequate for initial operations, is quickly overwhelmed. The benefit of a portable air conditioner is the flexibility to grow without losing your investment while also offering the ability to spot cool individual servers.

    Power

Power is the backbone for everything. Our units range from 115-volt to 220-volt power depending on size. 3-phase units can cost more up front, their operating costs are lower due to long-term power usage. Remember, without the proper power, servers can't run; but neither can air conditioners.

    Air Flow

Airflow is the hidden beast of air conditioning. You can have twice the needed cooling, but without good airflow, it is useless.
It is best to direct air at the front of your servers and allow it to filter through to the rear. In a multi-rack environment it is best to have all racks facing the same direction.

    Condensation

All air conditioners collect condensation. Our units can either collect it in a 5-gallon tank or pump it anywhere within 100 feet.
Some cheaper units advertise the ability to eat their own condensation when in fact they do no more than blow it into you ceiling. Would you want to blow the steam from a boiling pot of water into your ceiling? Neither would we.

    Document Situations (Click to Expand)

Growth of a business is generally considered a good thing. However, for Kevin Timmy at Document Situations, this posed a problem. Their job of copying and filing documents had been transitioning from paper to electronic formating until it comprised 95% of their workload. This required an increase in server capacity and manpower, which is when the problems began.

Kevin's building maintenance allowed him to fire up a dismantled 5-ton air conditioner sitting in his ceiling; a gift from the former tenants. This unit blew cold air into the general office and helped keep the temperatures down for the employees, with the little cooling that remained helping the servers.

The problem came to the fore when Kevin decided he wanted to secure his server closet. This required that the doors be closed, cutting off all A/C. He received a recommendation from a friend to call Portable Cooling for assistance. He called, and we answered.

Our first task was to establish his heat load. He had already done the calculations and found that he required 18,000 BTU's of cooling. He wanted to increase that number just a little to allow for future growth. Based on this number and the circumstances of his room, we recommended our A-2412 with a Condenser Return Plenum, Ceiling Kit, Condensate Pump and Nozzles. We double checked the questions and learned that he had gotten the BTU's required from his server manufacturers website. We immediately revised our quote to a larger A-3612 with the same accessories while explaining to him that the efficiency of air conditioners must be taken into consideration when using that method of heat calculation.

Not one to accept a single opinion, Kevin confirmed this information with our competition. He found that it was true when they offered to revise their quote based on this information. When his choice was made, Portable Cooling received the business. He joined the list of happy customers, grateful for personal assistance.

    Agai Laboratory (Click to Expand)

Solar heat is the beast that does not hide in the dark. It begins its work with the rising of the sun, only to quit with the days end. Agai Sciences' office manager, Jonathan Gerbert faced a difficult issue. Each day, the sun would march across the sky until it pointed directly into his westerly facing windows, overcoming the building air conditioner, increasing temperature, decreasing productivity and potentially damaging their work with blood. With plans to move within a year, Jonathan preferred to not donate a permanent system to the building.

His solution search began with a trip down to the local big box store where he purchased a portable air conditioner for $500 dollars. It was only after installing this unit that he learned of a common deception in the portable market. The manufacturer had inflated, and advertised the BTU rating of the machine by testing it at unrealistic temperatures.

Extremely displeased on learning that $500 dollars had been wasted, Jonathan contacted an air conditioning contractor, who in turn referred him to Portable Cooling. After asking several questions to determine his heat load, we loaded our truck and had a portable unit in his laboratory within the day. Agai Science rented two A-6012 units with nozzles, ceiling kit and condensate pump for three months before deciding to purchase one unit outright. Being portable, they could move the air conditioner with the office and use it as backup to the building system in an emergency. With Jonathan's choice, Agai Science joined the list of happy customers, grateful for a quick response and proactive service.

    Common Questions & Troubleshooting

  1. What are the power requirements for your machine?
  2. The A-1011 through A-1811 all run on 115v power. All larger units run on 220v power.

  3. How do I exhaust the hot air?
  4. The hot air is exhausted out of the top of the unit through ducting. There are many creative ways to exhaust the hot air out of your room.

  5. How do your units handle the condensation?
  6. Our units come standard with a 5-gallon tank. There is an optional pump that can be installed for 24/7 operation. Many units advertise that they "eat" their own condensate. This is simply not true. They run the condensate over the hot Freon and it evaporates and is exhausted out of your room. Therefore the humidity is not being removed; it is merely being blown somewhere else.

  7. What size unit do I need?
  8. The unit required depends on a number of variables. The size of the room and the wattage used are very important factors. Also, what you are attempting to accomplish affects your requirements. If you would like to receive some professional help for your situation please call 1-800-807-5798. You can also fill out our contact page and we will contact you to discuss your options.

  9. Why is the wattage so necessary?
  10. The wattage is what creates the heat. The heat is what you are attempting to cool. The room size is merely an empty box, not a major source of heat.

  11. Why use a water cooled unit instead of an air cooled unit?
  12. The main benefits of the water cooled unit are: no need to exhaust hot air, quieter, smaller and more efficient.

  13. Will your units remove unwanted humidity?
  14. Yes, our units will remove unwanted humidity form the air unlike other units which merely "moves" the humidity to another area.

  15. Many of your pictures have nozzles in them; do they come standard?
  16. No, the Nozzle Kits are sold as an accessory. They are very effective in spot cooling various "hot spots" that you may be concentrating on.

  17. How do I go about the warranty process?
  18. Your warranty solution is only a phone call away. Please call 1-800-807-5798 for instant help.

  19. What accessories are available for my unit?

    Troubleshooting

  21. My unit is frozen solid, how can I fix it?
  22. When a unit freezes it is generally due to a lack of air flow over the evaporative condenser coils (cold air intake). The first step would be to clean the filters on the front and back of the unit. Keep the blower on to speed up the process of thawing the unit out completely before restarting.

  23. My unit is leaking. Why?
  24. Make sure that your unit is on perfectly level ground. If so, please check your condensate tank to make sure that it is not full. The unit will shut down automatically due to a full condensate tank, but if a replacement part is required, we will supply that at no cost. Call 1-800-807-5798 for your warranty solution or email warranty. *if still under warranty*

  25. My unit is not under warranty, but i need a replacement part?
  26. Portablecooling.com is able to handle all of your replacement needs. If you don't know what part is required please call 1-800-807-5798 with your unit name (ie. A- 1211) and serial # (ie. J2-21779)

  27. I would like to remote the digital thermostat. How?
  28. A picture is worth 1,000 words and we have 3 pictures HERE.

  29. My unit is not producing cold air. Why?
  30. Make sure that you have set the mode button to cool mode on your digital thermostat.

  31. My unit has turned for some reason and won't come back on. Why?
  32. Open the door on the bottom of the unit and check to see if the condensate tank is full. Once emptied, the unit will return to life! If this does not work, please call 1- 800-807-5798 for technical support.
